Mirtos is a small holiday resort on the sunny South East coast of Crete, and in an area famous for it’s mild climate this is probably the warmest town of all, the protection provided by the surrounding hills seem to quiet the wind which makes this area ideal for winter horticulture, and home to a vast array of greenhouses. Mirtos with it’s beautiful beaches has been established as a holiday town for the past twenty years but has managed to maintain it’s own unique charm, visited and revisited by those dedicated to a relaxed way of life. There are ample Cafes Bars Tavernas and Resturants to meet the visitors needs, and with a nice selection of small tourist shops. The journey to Mirtos is about 2.5hrs from Heraklion via Ierapetra from which there is a good bus service, through the many small villages which straddle the main road villages such as Gra Ligia, Stomio, Neo Anatoli, Ammoudares, which are home to many of the horticultural workers. Also along this road you will find many beaches some of which will be empty even in summer. For the holidaymaker who finds Mirtos it must seem that the relaxed calm is as good as it gets but just a few more kilometers and you come to Tertsa, with a glorious beach and just somewhere to eat and drink. The hills behind Mirtos are home to some wonderful old villages, such as Mournies, Mithi, Hristos, and Males, these represent the Crete of the past when people lived in villages high in the hills and often hidden from the sea, to escape the pirates who sailed these ancient waters, today the make enjoyable places to visit and with a hire car there are some very enjoyable short drives which provide the most fabulous views down to the sea. They are also becoming popular for providing cheap property for renovation as holiday homes.
